Working closely with the NWBA Board, Division Coordinators, Field Scheduler, and Treasurer, the Umpire-in-Chief plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and fairness of games within the league, ensuring that umpires are well-prepared and equipped to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants at games and tournaments.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overall coordination of the league umpire program.
  • Recruiting, reviewing, and retaining a list of league umpires.
  • Attending umpire training programs, at the district, province and region levels.
  • Developing and presenting an umpire training plan and budget to the Board of Directors for approval.
  • Establishing and implementing an umpire training program for NWBA that is consistent with Little League guidelines.
  • Communicating with umpires to determine availability and working with the Field Scheduler to assign and schedule umpires, as necessary.
  • Working with the Treasurer to ensure umpires are compensated for their assigned games.
  • Communicating with coaches regarding changes to the umpire schedules (i.e., cancelled games, makeup games, playoff games, etc.).
  • Acting as a referral point for coaches and umpires in the interpretation of rules.
  • Serving as a NWBA Executive Board Member.

All NWBA Board positions are elected for a one-year term that completes Sept. 30th of each year.
In the off-season, the board typically meets once per month, usually via an online meeting. During the busy spring season (April to June), the board, or subcommittees of the board, may meet more frequently. Other board business is conducted via the Slack app.
