Coach Spotlight: Cav Whitely
Coach Whitely played college level and pro league baseball in his youth, and has extensive experience coaching at the college, provincial and national levels. He has been involved with baseball programs for UBC’s Thunderbirds, Douglas College’s Royals, Team BC, and Team Canada. Coach Whitely has been involved with NWBA since 2018, and he is NWBA’s current Vice President and Player & Coach Development Coordinator. His enthusiasm for the game of baseball and mentoring young athletes is infectious!
Coach Spotlight: Ed Welch
A multi-sport athlete, Coach Welch grew up playing a variety of sports, including baseball, soccer, basketball, rugby, and track and field. During his latter years of high school, Coach Welch specialized in baseball and track & field. He went on to earn many accolades in sport, including winning the Gold medal with teammate Justin Morneau and Team BC at the 1995 15U Western Canada Championship and being drafted into pro league baseball within the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization as a young adult (1998-2002). Fun fact: Coach Welch competed internationally for Canada in bobsleigh in 2004-2005. Also of note: Coach Welch has been a member of the RCMP for nearly 20 years, and he established a new record in 2017 for the RCMP’s Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE). 2025 marks Ed’s fifth year with NWBA, and his second year as NWBA’s President.
