Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

~ Helen Keller

New Westminster Baseball Association is a volunteer-run league; ongoing parent participation is essential to make our league run smoothly. What we can offer to our players as a league is directly related to how much volunteer support we receive.

The more volunteer support we have, the more we can offer to all our players!

We need and expect parents’ ongoing support in two areas: team-related AND league-related, especially during our busy Spring Season! Indeed, this is why we have league-level volunteering requirements in place for all NWBA families who did not pay the Volunteer Buy Out Fee at the time of registration.

Please join us in lending your support to our league through volunteering! 🙂

Team-Level Volunteer Roles:League-Level Volunteer Roles:

Field Prep

Board Member or Division Coordinator

Scorekeeper

Team Manager or Assistant Coach

Pitch Counter

Team Parent
Snack DutySpring Events & Tournaments Volunteer (at least one 3-hour shift for families of T-Ball players; at least two 3-hour shifts for families of Rookie, Minor or Major division players)

ALL NWBA families (who are not already volunteering as Board Members, Division Coordinators, Managers, Coaches, or Team Parents) are expected to take on some of the following team-level volunteer roles for their child’s team throughout the Spring Season, even those families who opted to pay the Volunteer Buy Out Fee at the time of registration. (All families, except those families who paid the Volunteer Buy Out Fee, must ALSO do some league-level volunteering, which is described further down this page.)

Sign-up for team-level volunteer roles is usually coordinated by the Team Parent or Team Manager through TeamSnap.

FIELD PREP

2 per game (Rookie Division & up)

Field prep volunteers essentially do the following tasks:

a) Setting up and putting away the bases
b) Lining the field for the game
c) Raking the field – Fill and tamp batter box and pitcher mound.
d) Help store away equipment if last game of the day

Please see our Field Prep Guidelines page for more specific information related to each diamond.

SCOREKEEPER

1 per game, per team (Rookie Division & up)

This position is required to keep accurate score at the assigned game. Each team (“Home” and “Away”) should have a scorekeeper, especially for all Minor and Major Division games, and for tournaments at all division levels. Scorekeepers need to arrive 15 minutes before the game starts.

Please see our Scorekeeping page for more information about this role.

PITCH COUNTER

1 per game, per team (Minor Division & up)

For the Minor and Major Divisions, a pitch count must be maintained, for pitcher safety. An advanced scorekeeper can keep track of the pitch count at the same time as scorekeeping, or the roles of pitch count and scorekeeper can be assigned to separate parent volunteers.

Please see our Pitch Count page to have a look at our pitch count form.

SNACK DUTY

1 per game, per team (especially for T-Ball and Rookie Divisions)

For the younger divisions, players often enjoy having a team snack after a game. Parents on “snack duty” purchase and distribute a small snack or two and/or a healthy beverage to players after the game. Common offerings include fruit, nut-free packaged snacks (crackers/chips/raisins/cookies/snack bars), or freezies/popsicles in warmer weather, and a juice box.

ASSIST T-BALL COACHES WITH DRILLS

For the T-Ball Division, parents may be encouraged to assist their child and their teammates with drills led by T-Ball coaches at practices.

BOARD MEMBER OR DIVISION COORDINATOR

Executive Board Members, Board Members, and Division Coordinators oversee the league and keep it running smoothly. All NWBA Board positions are elected for a one-year term that completes Sept. 30th of each year. The board typically meets once per month, usually via an online meeting. Other internal board business is conducted via the Slack app. Please see our Board Vacancies page to find out about vacant board positions that we are keen to fill!

TEAM MANAGER (AKA HEAD COACH) AND ASSISTANT COACHES

1 Manager per team; 1-3 Assistant Coaches per team (depending on division)

NWBA’s coaches are parents and members of the local community who generously volunteer their time to coaching our association’s Little League players. Some of our coaches have played and coached baseball (and/or softball) for many years, some at very high levels, while others are fairly new to baseball and are learning about this great game alongside their children, from T-Ball Division and up.

Please see the Coaches section of this website for more information, including the Roles for Coaches page.

TEAM PARENT

1 per team (Rookie Division & up)

The Team Parent assists the Manager (aka Head Coach) and Assistant Coaches with parent and team communications, and general team support. The Team Parent also works with the league Volunteer Coordinator and/or the Division Coordinator to track volunteer needs, including volunteer needs for upcoming tournaments.

Some examples of specific Team Parent tasks include:

– Uniform distribution and gathering
– Team communication–this can be done through TeamSnap
– Planning the team’s end of season party/wrap-up
– Help organize parents for other team roles (ex., snack duty, field prep, scorekeeper, pitch count)–this can be done through TeamSnap
– Assist coach, if needed, in keeping track of scores & pitch count (Minor Division & up)
– Assist coach, if needed, with supervising the players in the dugout

** Please note that all NWBA Team Managers (Head Coaches), Assistant Coaches and Team Parents need to get a Criminal Record Check (CRC), which they can do online. Please contact the NWBA Registrar for information on how to access the online CRC checking system.

NWBA SPRING EVENTS & TOURNAMENTS VOLUNTEERS

Many parent volunteers are needed to help run our league-wide events, especially during our busy Spring Season!

Indeed, all NWBA families who did not pay the Volunteer Buy Out Fee at the time of registration, and who are not already volunteering as a NWBA Board member, Head Coach or Assistant Coach, or Team Parent, are expected to volunteer at our NWBA Spring League-Wide Events and Tournaments.

Parents of Rookie, Minor, or Major-aged players are expected to volunteer for at least TWO 3-hour shifts during one or more of these events/tournaments, while parents of T-Ball Division players are expected to volunteer for a minimum of ONE 3-hour shift during one or more of these events/tournaments. Parents with multiple registered players are expected to follow the volunteer requirement for their oldest player.

Duties at league-wide events, such as tournaments, can include:

Most of these tasks are pretty straightforward, even for newcomers–and board members or coordinators will happily give you some instructions if you are unfamiliar with a task.

Please keep the following events and dates in mind as potential opportunities for your family to take on a league-level volunteer role and thereby meet your league-level volunteering requirements:
